Lamar Advertising has upgraded a Sioux Falls digital billboard with Daktronics technology, replacing equipment at a location that has served the market since 2008. A company release dated 24 September was published by Billboard Insider on 25 September.
The replacement decision
In the release, Lamar’s digital engineering manager Brad Miller says key components had reached end of life and replacement parts were no longer available. The story centres on reinvestment at an established advertising location rather than the opening of a new site.
That distinction matters for advertisers assessing a proposal: a hardware replacement should not be described as an increase in geographic coverage unless additional inventory is separately confirmed.
How to interpret the energy figure
Daktronics reports an estimated 80% reduction in average annual energy use when comparing the original product with today’s technology for a 14-by-48-foot display. This is a supplier estimate, not a published independently audited electricity-bill comparison for the Sioux Falls site.
The figure should also remain specific to the stated comparison. It does not establish an equivalent reduction in the total environmental footprint of an advertising campaign.
Reliability is part of the media product
BillboardGuide’s analysis: Buyers usually focus on location, audience and price, but the availability of the screen also matters. A campaign booked around a short promotion or an event has limited time to recover from an interruption.
The relevant questions concern operating hours, monitoring, outage reporting and the remedy when contracted delivery is missed. A newer display may be intended to improve operations, but campaign reliability should be assessed through documented delivery and service arrangements.
Our digital billboard guide provides a framework for comparing those terms alongside the physical placement.
Lifecycle planning should cover more than purchase price
For media owners, a replacement decision can consider maintenance access, parts availability, expected operating costs and the time required to restore service. Those factors affect how the asset can be supported over its useful life.
Before using an efficiency claim in a business case, request its assumptions. The comparison should identify the products, operating schedule and conditions behind the estimate. Capital cost and ongoing support should then be evaluated on the same planning horizon.
This is a decision framework, rather than a claim about savings already realised by Lamar at this location.
What advertisers should check after an upgrade
Request the current creative specifications and a recent image of the installed display. Confirm whether accepted file formats, dimensions or playback requirements have changed before reusing existing artwork.
A sharper screen still needs readable creative. Review the message from the expected viewing distance and keep the central idea easy to understand within the available exposure time. BillboardGuide’s creative checklist supports that review.
For reporting, distinguish playback evidence from audience and outcome estimates. Our OOH measurement analysis explains why those measures should be considered together.
The Sioux Falls project illustrates the continuing investment behind an established digital location. Its practical relevance is the attention it brings to the operational conditions supporting the media buy.
