Quick answer
The Sunset Strip billboards occupy one of the most culturally valuable out-of-home advertising corridors in the United States. Along Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, Los Angeles County, they place brands between Hollywood and Beverly Hills in a landscape shaped by music, film, nightlife and luxury hospitality.
This is not one screen or media-owner package. Inventory includes wallscapes, vertical bulletins, backlit and vinyl faces, special builds and full-motion digital spectaculars. The City regulates the digital generation through its Sunset Arts & Advertising Program, or SAAP, linking approvals to architecture, public art, civic content, sustainability and public-realm improvements.
For advertisers, the appeal is as much about cultural positioning as raw reach. A strong placement can become part of the visual language of Los Angeles, particularly for entertainment launches, awards campaigns, music, fashion, luxury, technology and high-profile brand statements.

Where are the Sunset Strip billboards?
The Sunset Strip is the West Hollywood section of Sunset Boulevard, running from the Beverly Hills border in the west to Havenhurst Avenue at the Los Angeles border in the east. The City describes it as a major regional and international visitor destination. In everyday media planning, the highest-profile inventory is concentrated around Sunset Plaza, Doheny Drive, La Cienega Boulevard, the Whisky a Go Go, The Roxy, Rainbow Bar & Grill, Sunset Tower Hotel and The Comedy Store.
The corridor is commonly described as roughly 1.5 to 1.7 miles long. It should not be confused with the full Sunset Boulevard, which continues through Hollywood and east Los Angeles in one direction and Beverly Hills, Bel Air and the Westside in the other. Chateau Marmont is an important nearby landmark at the eastern approach, but address-level verification still matters because the municipal rules and inventory ownership change outside West Hollywood.
This guide concerns large-format Sunset Strip billboards and digital spectaculars. It does not cover Los Angeles freeway bulletins, Santa Monica Boulevard shelters or kiosks, Downtown Los Angeles wallscapes, indoor hotel signage, or unpermitted wildposting.
Why advertisers choose the Sunset Strip
The Strip combines vehicular visibility, pedestrian activity and cultural relevance. Sunset carries commuters, rideshare passengers, tour vehicles and visitors between Hollywood, Beverly Hills and the Westside. Restaurants, hotels, clubs and retail add evening and weekend audiences.
The surrounding environment gives the media its distinctive value:
- Entertainment companies, production businesses, creative agencies and industry talent operate across greater Los Angeles.
- Music landmarks including the Whisky a Go Go, The Roxy and Rainbow Bar & Grill reinforce the corridor's rock-and-roll identity.
- Hotels, restaurants and Sunset Plaza attract affluent local and visitor audiences.
- Awards-season activity makes Los Angeles entertainment billboard advertising especially competitive during Oscar, Emmy and Grammy consideration periods.
- A distinctive execution can extend into press, creator content and social sharing.
Billboard formats available
Wallscapes and tall walls
Building-mounted wallscapes suit portraits, fashion imagery, entertainment key art and minimalist statements. OUTFRONT documented a 2024 Ralph Lauren execution on a 73-foot-high West Hollywood tall wall visible to traffic in both directions. Clear Channel Outdoor's Sunset Millennium also markets wallscapes across four blocks.
Static and backlit bulletins
Vinyl bulletins and backlit vertical faces offer consistent display instead of a rotating digital slot. Clear Channel includes backlit vertical bulletins in Sunset Millennium. Dimensions vary, so request a current unit sheet rather than assume a standard U.S. bulletin size.
Hand-painted and custom executions
Hand-painted album campaigns helped establish the Strip's music identity in the late 1960s and 1970s. Contemporary murals, dimensional extensions and special builds can fit the setting, subject to the face, engineering, landlord approval, schedule and City requirements.
Full-motion digital spectaculars
SAAP has introduced architecturally integrated full-motion digital signs rather than a uniform roadside-screen network. The City’s current MIMA art program confirms eight digital billboard locations displaying moving-image work during June–September 2026:
This list demonstrates current operation for the City art program; it is not a complete list of every static face, wallscape, approved project or commercially available unit on the corridor. Availability and sales representation must be checked for the requested dates.

Sunset Strip 3D billboard capability
The Now at 8497–8499 Sunset Boulevard, at La Cienega Boulevard, is the clearest verified option for a Sunset Strip 3D billboard in West Hollywood. It went live in April 2025 and is co-owned by The Now and Orange Barrel Media, with OBM operating the display.
City permit material describes a three-sided full-motion media cube with 2,525 square feet of digital sign face, including a 1,170-square-foot principal advertising face. Daktronics, which manufactured and installed the display, describes approximately 2,500 square feet of LED across a 90-degree main face and an underside display, with 6-millimeter pixel spacing. The format supports forced-perspective or anamorphic creative and is designed for multiple viewing angles.
The three faces must show one campaign at a time under the permit. This is not a guaranteed long-term takeover; duration, rotation and share of voice still need to be negotiated with OBM. Do not assume other screens support true anamorphic work without an asset-specific template and operator confirmation.
Operators and direct buying routes
Ownership is fragmented, and a single enquiry will not necessarily unlock the whole Strip. The most useful verified direct routes are:
Some sites involve property or venue partners, and representation can change. Ask for the exact address, face direction, current photo, format, production requirements and confirmation that the operator controls the unit.

Audience and measurement
Audience figures for the Sunset Strip require disciplined interpretation. Clear Channel currently says its Sunset Millennium portfolio delivers 12 million monthly impressions, citing Geopath OOH Ratings 2022. That is a portfolio figure for its cluster of Sunset assets—not a guaranteed audience for every billboard face.
Daktronics says The Now receives more than two million weekly impressions. The figure is presented in connection with the three-panel display, but the public page does not explain the full measurement methodology. Buyers should request the current operator proposal, source period, audience definition and whether the number represents modeled impressions, circulation or another measure.
City visitor totals and wider Los Angeles market reach establish context but cannot be relabeled as impressions for one billboard. Do not add visitor totals, traffic counts and operator estimates together.
For evaluation, request:
- Current Geopath or other operator-recognized unit ratings where available
- Face direction and visibility window
- Modeled weekly impressions and measurement period
- Commercial share of voice for digital rotations
- Proof-of-posting or playback reporting
- Any brand-lift, search-lift, footfall or site-visit study proposed for the campaign
Rules, lighting and public-art time
The City adopted the Sunset Boulevard Off-Site Signage Policy in 2019 and has continued reviewing refinements to brightness, orientation and operational standards. SAAP projects pass through design-excellence screening and project-specific permitting rather than receiving blanket approval.
The most commercially important rule is the public-content allocation. Each SAAP billboard must provide 17.5% of each hour—10.5 minutes—for City announcements and/or public art. The City says full-motion signs display this content at the top of the hour, while current MIMA schedules show that some sites also present art at the half-hour or other intervals. Commercial availability therefore cannot be calculated as if every minute were sellable.
Lighting controls cover spill toward sensitive uses, luminance transitions, visual comfort, remote control and monitoring. The Now's approval references a 1.4 foot-candle limit at sensitive nearby uses, three-year monitoring and a project-specific initial nighttime cap of 200 candelas per square metre, subject to its adjustment process. Do not apply these figures to every billboard; hours and luminance can be permit-specific.
Advertisers should obtain the current content rules, operating schedule, audio restrictions, prohibited categories and technical specifications from the operator before production. Public art and City-content obligations are operational constraints, not optional commercial inventory.
How much does a West Hollywood digital billboard cost?
There is no reliable public rate card that applies across the Strip. Media owners quote by address, direction, format, flight length, production complexity, share of voice, exclusivity, season and demand.
Static placements are often planned in multi-week flights, with four weeks a useful quotation basis, while digital spectaculars may be sold through rotations, dominant presence or custom takeovers. Awards season, major entertainment launches and other high-demand periods can command premium pricing and require early commitment. A 3D anamorphic campaign also carries creative-development and testing costs beyond media space.
For a comparable direct quote, provide each operator with the same brief:
Ask proposals to separate media, production, installation, engineering, permit costs and creative adaptation. Confirm cancellation terms and approvals before treating inventory as secured.
- Preferred addresses or sub-corridor
- Campaign dates and flexibility
- Four-week budget or required flight length
- Static, full-motion or anamorphic preference
- Desired share of voice or exclusivity
- Creative-production requirements
- Measurement and reporting needs
Creative guidance for Sunset Boulevard
Creative should communicate quickly at changing speeds and angles. Use one visual idea, restrained copy, high contrast and a legible brand mark. Design for vertical proportions rather than cropping landscape art.
Full-motion work should open with recognizable branding, remain understandable without sound and account for City-content interruptions. For The Now, build to the operator's exact 3D template and primary viewing zone; forced perspective only works from planned sightlines. Social-first spectacle can be valuable, but the street-level message must still make sense to someone who sees only a few seconds.
Entertainment and award season billboards often benefit from restraint: a face, title, date or FYC message can outperform a crowded poster. Luxury and fashion suit skyline-scale wallscapes; music campaigns can reference the Strip's painted heritage.
Notable billboard heritage and campaigns
Clear Channel's historical account notes a Beatles Abbey Road mural in 1969 and a large Carly Simon placement promoting her Troubadour appearances in the early 1970s. The same operator's 2025 review highlighted contemporary Sunset work for Audemars Piguet, DKNY, Ralph Lauren, FX and Disney. These examples show the corridor's continuity from album-launch culture to streaming, film, fashion and luxury advertising.
The City program adds a newer layer: billboard revenue funds moving-image art, while digital structures support coordinated public programming. The Sunset Spectacular at 8775 Sunset launched in 2021; The Now followed in 2025 as the Strip's first verified full-motion ultra-high-definition 3D anamorphic billboard. By the City's June 2026 MIMA cycle, eight digital addresses were participating.
Do not assume every concept selected in earlier SAAP design competitions has been built. The City announced 21 top-scoring concepts in 2020 and additional later rounds, but concept selection, approval, construction and commercial operation are different stages. Use the City's current approved/proposed map and operator confirmation when planning future campaigns.
Is Sunset Strip billboard advertising right for your campaign?
Advertise on Sunset Boulevard when cultural stature, entertainment relevance and photographic impact matter as much as efficient market coverage. It is especially suitable for film and television premieres, FYC campaigns, album releases, fashion and luxury launches, major technology brands and creative-led corporate statements.
It is less suitable for inexpensive frequency across the whole Los Angeles DMA or direct-response coverage near dispersed stores. Then, the Strip may work best as a hero placement supported by broader Los Angeles OOH.
The strongest plan begins with a specific address and viewing direction, not the phrase “Sunset Strip” alone. Request current availability directly from the relevant media owner, verify the unit and its commercial rights, then build creative for that exact architecture.

Frequently Asked
- Are the Sunset Strip billboards in Los Angeles or West Hollywood?
- They are primarily in the independent City of West Hollywood, within Los Angeles County, California, United States. The wider Sunset Boulevard continues into the City of Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, so address-level confirmation is important.
- Can Sunset Strip digital billboards show full-motion video?
- Yes. Multiple SAAP sites show moving-image content, and the City describes them as full-motion billboards. Technical delivery, operating schedule and commercial rotation vary by asset.
- Is there a 3D billboard on the Sunset Strip?
- Yes. The Now at 8497 Sunset Boulevard is a verified full-motion 3D anamorphic display. It uses a multi-face corner-cube design with an underside screen. Confirm creative templates and preferred viewing positions with Orange Barrel Media.
- Can one advertiser take over the whole Sunset Strip?
- Potentially, but not through one universal inventory owner. A multi-site domination would require coordinated direct agreements with several operators and possibly venue or property partners. City public-art time remains protected on SAAP displays.
- How far in advance should advertisers book?
- Awards season, major releases, custom builds and anamorphic creative warrant early enquiries. Ask operators for live availability.
