Creative specifications and production requirements
Confirm screen orientation, resolution, sound policy, dwell, frequency cap, interaction method and whether the audience is passenger or street-facing.
Before design begins, request a current mechanical or digital specification sheet for every unit. Confirm:
Never assume that two units sold under the same format name accept the same artwork. The operator-issued specification takes precedence over dimensions found in a general guide.
Creative best practices
Passenger screens can support a clear next action; street-facing tops should be treated like concise moving DOOH.
A strong execution normally has a clear hierarchy: one idea, one dominant visual, one short message and unmistakable branding. Use contrast that survives the real environment, not just a bright laptop screen. Mock up the ad from the expected viewing distance and angle. If the audience is moving, test comprehension in seconds; if the audience is waiting, use the extra dwell carefully rather than filling every empty area.
For localized campaigns, use place names, neighborhood cues, nearby landmarks, route context or a genuinely useful local offer when they improve the message. Location relevance supports both human response and clear machine understanding of what the campaign is designed to do.
Campaigns that suit this format
This format is a weaker fit when the campaign depends on long explanations, precise individual-level targeting, immediate last-click attribution or production changes that the operator cannot make within the flight.
- Apps
- Entertainment
- Travel
- Dining
- Finance and offers that benefit from a captive passenger audience.
Measurement and KPIs
Verified impressions/plays, completed views where defined, QR or touch interactions, app installs, web visits and brand lift.
Start with the business objective, then choose the smallest defensible set of KPIs. Delivery evidence is not the same as effectiveness: a posting photo or play log confirms that media ran, while a lift or outcome study asks whether it changed awareness or behavior.
For digital OOH, document how a play becomes an impression and whether multipliers, audience models or venue counts are used. For outcome measurement, agree on exposed and control methodology, attribution windows, deduplication, privacy thresholds and incrementality before the campaign begins.
Buying checklist
- Obtain a unit list with addresses or coordinates, format, orientation, illumination, audience estimates and photos.
- Verify dates, availability, cancellation terms, exclusivity, content restrictions and make-good policy.
- Request exact specifications and an itemized production quote before approving creative.
- Review sightlines or venue context, not just beauty shots supplied in a proposal.
- Define proof-of-delivery, reporting frequency, measurement method and ownership of campaign data.
- Add realistic time for approval, production, installation, troubleshooting and removal.
